Do You Believe in Magic... Sea Day #3

A Little Bit of Everything

Saturday, June 20. 2015

Morning
Another typical morning came peaking through our window as the sun was rising and we were too. I had already reached the goal of running 6 miles at sea so I opted to not jog while Chris continued to push forward and jog 2 miles (He is so dedicated... I love that and wish I could do that too). Knowing that we are bringing the kids on a cruise in November we decided to pay the $5 fee to partake in the Green Eggs and Ham Dr. Seuss Character Breakfast. WOW... This was so cool and so much fun! The entire lower level of the Main Dining Room was decorated in Red and Blue with Cat in the Hat decorations everywhere. The menu featured Green Eggs and Ham, of course, and other food that had a Dr. Seuss themed base. Several of the Dr. Seuss characters came out and gave autographs and took pictures and it was tons of fun, even for this 32 year old. I know my kids and most kids less than 10 would have a BLAST! I loved every minute and I think it is well worth the $5/pp we paid to get in! Be sure to book this early as it does sell out!

Words cannot describe the excitement I was feeling!

The dessert bar! Every thing was extravagantly decorated and fit the theme very well!

Our table... LOVED it!

More table and room decorations!

A Cat in the Hat ice sculpture! Are you kidding me?

Chris being silly with his bow-tie napkin.

My pancakes... they were the hat from the Cat in the Hat! So cool!

The Cat in the Hat himself dancing around as we ate breakfast!

He even had time to pose for a picture!

An up close of the Dr. Seuss ice sculpture.

Thing 1 and Thing 2... Gosh this was FUN!

After meeting and greeting the Cat in the Hat we went to the FRIENDS trivia in the Piano Bar. If there ever was a trivia I could win.. .this was it! I was ready and Chris even started prepping me with questions as warm-ups before it started. Unfortunately, I scored 17/22 and and the winner scored 21/22 so I was not the champion. I felt like a complete failure. How could I not remember "Frank Jr. Jr." or the name of Joey's barker lounger? Oh well... It was fun! We then stayed for Scattergories which was fun with nearly 50 people playing! We didn't win this either but we had FUN!

We LOVE the Carnival Magic! Might be our new favorite ship!

Then we went to the Serenity Deck to try to find some deck chairs but they were all taken so we searched for another 10-15 minutes before finally finding some in the shade, bonus, on deck 11. We sat and napped there for nearly 45 minutes before making our way to the pasta bar! Cucina del Captiano once again hit the spot and completely blew us away. Chris was even impressed this time. While this "make your own" pasta bar was complimentary for lunch it does cost $15 for adults and $5 for kids at night and we both agree it would be worth that! Great food, atmosphere and service!

Afternoon
Immediately following Cucina del Captiano we went down to the Lido for the Chocolate Extravaganza buffet. This was not my cup of tea at all as I do not really like chocolate but I loved the thrill of standing in line for an exotic orange/ mocho chocolate cheesecake (YUCK by the way). Chris enjoyed most of the offerings and once again the fruit carvings were incredible. A word to the wise... GET THERE EARLY as the line for these buffets were about 40-60 feet deep at 12:30, just 20 minutes after opening!

Just some of the offerings on the Chocolate Extravaganza!

We wanted to spend some time just exploring and enjoying the ship so we once again just walked around and tried to take it all in. We also wanted to relax so we found some deck chairs in the shade to lounge around in! This was perfect and really hit the spot.

Afterwards we found the "I'm not really hungry but I will eat anyway" line for the Oceanside BBQ we liked so much on Tuesday so we once again ate some luscious and delicious food. As previous stated there were 4,700 people on board and I never really felt that way or crowded at all... until it was time to eat and I had to stand in line. However, I did not feel this way at the food offerings on the Lanai on Deck 5. The Oceanside BBQ, Snadwich shop and create your own salad bar never had a line more than 5-10 people and the food was just as good if not better than that on the traditional Lido buffet!

Some of the offerings on Lanai Deck 5... this is at the Taste Bar and is a sandwich shop!

We spent a while packing, everybody saw "awe", and some time on our balcony before we went to Tea Time. Once again, Tea Time was very impressive and we thoroughly enjoyed. It was a touch of class for Carnival and look for it on Sea Days at 3:00PM.

Chris enjoying his favorite tea!

Just some of the goodies that were offered at afternoon tea time!
Check it out... Sea Days at 3:00PM!

We spent the remaining time of the afternoon trying to take it easy and actually be on vacation. We even saw the Royal Caribbean Navigator of the Seas traveling home from their course on the Caribbean. This reminded us of prior cruises we have observed other ships that ended up being futures cruises for us. While on the Carnival Conquest in 2013 and Royal Caribbean Navigator of the Seas in August of 2014 we saw the Carnival Magic of which we sailed in 2015 and while on the Navigator of the Seas in August 2014 we saw the Carnival Legend of which we will sail in June 2016 as we embark on the wonderful countryside in Alaska. This cruise we saw Royal Caribbean Independence of the Seas and Carnival Breeze. It will be interesting to see if either of these 2 will be future home away from home for us. My bet is on the Carnival Breeze solely because she comes to her new home port of Galveston in May 2016... I think we will be booking her for summer 2017! We are excited!

Deck Chair selfie!

Evening
We wanted to be sure to be in the Main Dining Room when it opened as we the knew the last night of the cruise is always one of the busiest as everyone wants one more amazing meal. We praised our waitstaff and gave them additional tips before watching their farewell performance. I love that Carnival has their waitstaff perform songs and dances for their guests and this performance was great and really made me smile, and perhaps cry as I knew the end of this glorious week was about to end.

Norbert and Minggus, our waitstaff, was AWESOME!
Some of the BEST MDR service we have ever had!

The entire waitstaff singing for us "You're leaving our FUNSHIP"!

The sun was going to set at 8:05PM so we had plenty of balcony time before we continued our last night tradition of watching the sunset. Unfortunately, the clouds and hazy fog made it difficult to watch the sun completely set on the horizon but we still love this tradition. If you are a new cruiser, especially, be sure to set aside time to watch the sunset at least once on your cruise!

There was not a main headliner show or Farewell show, which was disappointing, but we were able to attend the Gender Showdown competition, watch the last of the Dive-in movie and enjoy a sing-along in the Piano Bar. The Dive-in movie was especially relaxing and nice and would be perfect for families. The movie being shown on this night was "Home" and while we only saw the last part of it, we really enjoyed it!

We made our way to our room at the later part of the evening and did our final packing steps and spent some time on our balcony listening to the waves roll by as we looked at the gorgeous blue waters we were passing through. Tomorrow will be disembarkation day and looking back it has been a cruise for the memory and record books.

Do You Believe in Magic... Cozumel, Mexico

Dive In
Friday, June 19, 2015
It's time to DIVE IN... in Cozumel, Mexico!

Rise and shine... It's SHIP time! One of the things Chris and I have noticed is that on port days the pools, hot tubs and deck chairs are not very busy and sparsely populated so we planned on enjoying these areas while they were vacant. We both jogged 2 miles this morning while watching the sunrise and then saw the awesome Towel Animal display on all 250 deck chairs in the Main Pool area. This was so cool and they even had large Towel Animals floating in the Main Pool. This is something new Carnival is doing on all their ships on the next to last day of the cruise! Get there early if you want to take pictures as once the guest start waking up and arriving it gets busy and hard to capture the true 250 towel animal effect.

WooHoo... Another 2 miles jogged at sea! That is over 6 total for the trip!
This is my FIRST time ever to even put out any effort to exercise!

What a difference a few years and 80 pounds can make! Thank you PLEXUS!

A view of the Main Pool Lido area with all 250 deck chairs covered in Towel Animals!

Chris getting ready to train for his triathlon but paused for a picture with the large Towel Animals!

My favorite was the penguin Towel Animal! SO SO CUTE!

We didn't have our shore excursion until 1:30PM so the morning was ours to spend on this beautiful and glorious ship! After Chris spent 30 solid minutes of swimming and training for his triathlon we went to the aft pool and swam a while and then spent well over and hour in the aft hot-tub by ourselves as we approached Cozumel. We ended up parking at the Punta Langosta pier which is located in downtown Cozumel. During our previous 4 stops in Cozumel we have always docked at the International or the Punta Maya pier which is about 1.5 miles from downtown. This pier was much less touristy and did not offer as many shops and restaurants but it served it's purpose. We did not find free wifi which was unfortunate since we knew it was offered at Three Amigos at the International Pier. Around 11am we decided to go ahead and get off and explore the pier area since we had never been and then get back on the ship for lunch. This worked out well as we purchased all of our souvenirs prior to our excursion and then we could take them back to the room without having to haul them around.

Chris training for his triathlon! Crazy that he was able to swim for 30+ full minutes ALL by himself on a cruise ship swimming pool! Trust me, the chances of that are very slim! That says something about the emptiness of a ship on a port day!

Chris and I in Cozumel!

Our ship docked at Punta Langosta in downtown Cozumel.

Royal Caribbean's Independence of the Seas and Carnival Breeze docked at the International Pier in Cozumel.

Chris really liked the Mongolian Wok on the ship and as I mentioned in our embarkation post that this area fills up VERY fast with guests during lunch so we were there when it opened at 12PM. This was a great idea as within minutes it became packed, even on a port day! Again, if you plan on eating at this venue get there early!

As soon as we finished lunch we got back off the ship and made our way to our Sea Trek Helmet Dive shore excursion waiting area. We got there around 12:45PM for our 1:30PM departure and found a worker and asked about the wait. He took our waivers and forms and sent us on with the group that just left. This was nice to not have to wait.

I'm ready to DO THIS!

We got suited up and entered the ocean with our 70+ pound helmet. This was incredibly fascinating and while I was very nervous about the whole situation I entered the water and I was BLOWN AWAY. I have never experienced anything like it in my lifetime. We were able to walk on the ocean floor 25 feet below the surface and see things like coral, all kids of fish and sea life and even a sunken airplane. We held onto to a hexagon shaped rope the whole time to keep level with the ocean floor and not get water into our helmets. We had a crystal clear view the entire time and got to see some amazing things! Wow... God's handiwork impresses me once again! We got to hold a massive lobster, a starfish and feed a large school of fish! We even did a disco dance on the ocean floor before getting out! This was incredible and I HIGHLY recommend it! Be sure to catch our updated shore excursion post coming soon for more info! All I can say is WOW! The company takes pictures and videos for you to purchase and even though we had our own camera we both thought the 51 (seriously, FIFTY ONE) pictures they took of us and the video were worth the $65!

Our camera- This was our dive site! Right beside Margarittaville in Downtown Cozumel.

Our Camera- Helmet Dive Selfie

Our Camera- The starfish we were able to hold while 25 feet below the surface on the ocean floor.

Their Camera- Yeah I was a little nervous! But once I got down there all that went away!

Their Camera- Hello form 25 feet below the water surface on the ocean floor!

Their Camera- This was an amazing excursion! I cannot speak highly enough of it!
Look at the colors just in this picture!

Their Camera- Holding a HUGE starfish! This was SO cool!

Their Camera- The Davis Family and the Mexican starfish!
(Sounds like a move title huh... be sure to check out the video attached too

Their Camera- Chris holding a sea urchin!

Their Camera- Holding a massive Lobster!
I was so freaked out but it was AWESOME!

Their Camera- Feeding a school of fish!

Their Camera- Goodbye, for now, Cozumel. It's been REAL!

Our Dive video...
Sea Trek Helmet Dive- Cozumel

Seriously, I cannot speak highly enough of this excursion and this company! The experience was once in a lifetime and easily is one of the best, if not the absolute best, excursion we have done in our 5 cruises. Sea Trek is offered in Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Grand Turk and several other Caribbean ports. The pictures and videos may be an added cost but I personally think it is worth it for this quality of pictures and memories (I purposely noted our camera and their camera so you could see the difference).  Sea Trek Cozumel cannot be beat for an unbelievable island memory!
After our helmet dive we were given the option to snorkel above the sites we just saw and Chris decided to take advantage of this while I opted to clean up and watch the video and pictures of the experience we just had! I felt like the snorkel would not match up to what I had just seen on the ocean floor but in hindsight I wish I would have taken the plunge and did a little snorkeling. Grand Cayman was such a disappointment that I should have ended snorkeling on a better note but... oh well!

We spent a little time in a few shops as we made our way back to downtown and our ship! We got back on board and cleaned up before making our way to 80s Name that song. Unfortunately, we did not reclaim our defending title of reigning 80s champions while on the Serenade but we still had fun none the less.

Our call time was at 5:30PM and this was taken from our balcony at 4:45PM. Remember, get back to your ship on time and even better to get there early!

It's DINNER TIME in Cozumel!

Dinner was yet another wonderful meal and perhaps the best service we had the entire cruise. We were able to sit at the exact table and have the same waitstaff each and every night despite having Your Time Dining. Norbert, Minggus and Udhana were incredible and we were so lucky to have been able to have them all week. Your Time Dining allows you to come to dinner anytime you wish and we were consistent with going early but that really did pay off!

After dinner we went back to the room and went into a "food coma" so to speak. We both were so full and laid down and before you know it we had fallen asleep for 45 minutes. The room steward, Esparanza, knocked on the door and we both were in a dead sleep. That nap helped us push through a fully loaded and busy night. We both got some candy from the Cherry on Top candy store (because sometimes you just HAVE to be a kid again) and then watched the Magic/ Comedy show in the Spotlight Lounge. This was performed by one of the ships Comedy managers and it was lame and dirty, especially for a "family friendly" show. I think on Carnival you just have to know going in that sometimes the boundaries might be broken when it comes to this!

The one and only midnight buffet was at 11:30PM this night and we knew we could not go back to the room because if we did we would fall asleep so we got a deck of cards from Guest Services and went to Red Frog Pub to try one of their in house made ales and play some blackjack. This was a lot of fun and relaxing but I was losing TERRIBLY! We ended up never gambling and if this 2 hours of cards was a sign of what would have been, I am glad we didn't! We ran into James, the Cruise Director, and talked to him a while about Carnival and their plans to change and upgrade as well as activity offerings such as The Quest.,, a hilarious adults-only scavenger hunt that we have seen on 3 of our 5 cruises and have loved to people watch, not necessarily play but watch! By the end of our conversation I was sure I just didn't like him! "Thankyouverymuch.com" was beginning to get annoying as he would say it on all of his ship announcements and then said it to us before he left! What a loser... I, seriously, could do better! In fact, I think I want to be a cruise director in my next life! Wouldn't that be awesome... Chris can be the on board teacher for all of the 10 american workers on board (HAHA... 10 more like 2) and I can be the Cruise Director! SIGN US UP!

We made our way to the Mexican Fiesta Buffet which started early at 11:15PM and tried out all of the awesome Tex-Mex like foods as well as see all of the awesome fruit and ice carvings! This is old style cruising as not many ships and cruise lines do this anymore! However, if you are cruising and you see this type of thing offered... DO IT! You will not regret it! Yummy and often extravagant foods plus the thrill of eating them at midnight!  We loved it and wish all cruise lines and ships offered something like this!

Can you believe this is a WATERMELON! So cool! Even if you do not want to actually EAT at midnight, at least go and check out the awesome carvings!

Again, this is a WATERMELON! Crazy... and kinda creepy!

Our very own Towel Animal in our room that evening!

We dived into the pool in the morning, into the ocean in the afternoon and into the food in the evening and we had a great day! Tomorrow will be our last day at sea and we want to make sure we cover all of our bases and see and do EVERYTHING on the Carnival Magic

Up Next... Sea Day #3!

Do You Believe in Magic... Grand Cayman

Wet-N-Wild
Thursday, June 18, 2015

Morning
Once again our morning started with jogging and sunrise watching. The ship was a lot busier than usual as this port time was switched from 10AM-4PM to 7AM-4PM and most of the guests were planning on going to Grand Cayman. All ships have to drop anchor about 1 mile off shore in Grand Cayman because of the shallow waters and the protection of these reefs which means there is a "tendering" process involved. This means that local passenger ferry style boats came to our ship and took loads of passengers ranging from 100-300 at a time to the pier in Grand Cayman. I personally enjoy this process and I like the tendering boats and the feeling of riding on a speed boat, even if just for a few miles. The sitting and waiting process can be tedious and tiring so Chris and most other cruisers do not prefer this method but it is necessary in some ports. The most common tendering ports in the Western Caribbean are Grand Cayman and Belize.

On board the Magic overlook the Independence of the Seas... Will we sail her next?

A view from our Cove Balcony around 8AM.

Waiting in the Spotlight Lounge for our tender boat!

Our tendering process began early and the overall process took less than 20 minutes from arrival in the waiting area to stepping foot on land in Grand Cayman. This is not always the case so we were pleasantly surprised. Once on land in Grand Cayman we immediately went to a store we knew had free wifi so we could make contact with our kids and parents. This is the Tortuga Rum Store right inside the Georgetown pier. You do not have to buy anything at all (I always do try to buy a Gatorade or something... seems like the polite thing to do) and there is not password! Be sure to stop buy before or after your excursion!  With the pending Tropical Storm Bill making impact in Houston on previous days we wanted to make sure our car was OK but more importantly we wanted to make sure our kids were safe and sound with Gigi Shirley and Poppy on their way to Minnesota for their annual baseball trip! We sent many pictures and videos to them but never heard back from them.

Our beautiful ship, The Carnival Magic, as we sailed away in our tender boat!

Tender Boat selfie!

The shallow waters at the pier in Grand Cayman.
This is the reason why ALL ships have to anchor over a mile away!
Look at those crystal clear blue waters! Best in the Western Caribbean!

Another view of our home away from home once we got into the pier!

One of our favorite ports in the Western Caribbean!
You can see the MASSIVE Independence of the Seas in the background.
It is the 6th Largest cruise ship in the world!

Our Kayaking tour began with a bus ride to a remote side of the island where we would kayak and then eventually snorkel. I love visiting countries where they drive on the wrong (left) side of the road... It makes for a very thrilling ride! We got to the beach and got a quick demonstration/review then mounted our Ocean Kayaks for a 0.75 mile ride to our 1st stop... The Shoe Tree. This was a tree decorated with flip-flops that were found on the beach. Our guide also told us about the awesome sea-grass found on the ocean's floor and it's vital roll in the Grand Cayman beaches. We then kayaked 0.5 miles further to a stop where he highlighted the red and black mangroves found in Grand Cayman and also told us about the Cayman trench, just miles away from us and the precious coral reed just off shore. We were also able to see some of the amazing real estate right off the beach and their prices. The creator and owner of DART Styrofoam owns a "winter house" there and let me just say it was gorgeous!

Our kayaks just waiting for us to take them for a ride.

Kayak Selfie!

It is kinda difficult to make it out but the Shoe Tree is in the background!
I wish I would have known, I would have brought a flip-flop to hammer on to it!

The beautiful Red Mangroves found in the shallow waters of this part of the island!

The "DART" CEO's winter get-away. It is over 10,000 SQFT and when purchased in 2004 only cost $4.5 million. Sure it seems like a lot but 1,200 SQFT apartments in Manhattan currently sell for $3.0 million so I would say this was a GOOD buy!

The tide was very high that day and as we kayaked to the middle of the ocean where the snorkel boat was we were fighting a very hard current and tide. This was another 500-700 yards out and it was a battle just to get there. Once we arrived we got off our kayaks and started the snorkel process. This was a MAJOR let-down and both Chris and I were disappointed in this part of the excursion. The spot where we snorkeled lacked coral and even fish so most of what we saw was the sea-grass. Combine that with the crazy currant and high-tide and it was a bust! We had read reviews that despite the gorgeous waters of Grand Cayman that the snorkeling was lacking and this proved to be true to us. I have seen better snorkeling and views in Flordia! The waves were choppy and some of the others on the excursion gave up fighting the waves while snorkeling and sat on the boat.  Chris and I would later describe them as wussies.  We got back on our kayaks and paddled back to our starting point where we finished our excursion.

A video of the Grand Cayman snorkeling and the 1 coral reef we saw!

Chris snorkeling in the gorgeous Grand Cayman waters!

Our view of the snorkeling.
Again, it was not terrible but I was disappointed!

I love this picture because it looks like I am crying to help but I was actually able to stand and touch in this picture but the tide was so high and rough it seemed otherwise! Haha... memories!

The AFTER pictures!

Afternoon
We stopped at the Tortuga store for one last wifi check and then we took a tender back to the ship around 2PM. The Royal Caribbean Independence of the Seas was also in port this day and their line for tendering was about 500 people deep so we knew we had to get back on our ship soon or we would be waiting in line too! That is another tip... Whatever the last tender to the boat time is (Example- 3:15PM), be sure to be back at the tender boat about 45 minutes to an hour before that (Example- 2:15 to 2:30PM). Trust me, there is a lot of hassle and worry headed your way if you are late! Not to mention you could literally miss the boat! We have seen it before! Always be on time when returning to your ship, especially at tendering ports!

The last tender for us was 3:15PM and this was taken from our ship at 2:45PM. Zoom in and you can see the terribly long line! Again, get to the tender boats EARLY!

Headed back to our ship on the afternoon tender!

A Grand Cayman selfie! I love this one!

Once back on board we were hungry so we tried out the "Off the Grill" or Guy's Burgers wanna-bee on the Lido buffet. These were OK but nothing compared to Guy's Burger Joint that is offered on 2.0 Funships (Conquest, Miracle, Triumph and Freedom just to name a few). Then without waiting the recommended 30 minutes after eating we headed straight to the WaterWorks to ride the water-slides and have fun in the splash pad before the other 4,700 people got back on board.

Hello again, WaterWorks! WE LOVED this place! Really wish Natalie and Luke were with us!
I swear I thought about them more on this trip because of all of the COOL stuff the Magic offered! This is a kid-friendly ship! Take your kids on it! DO IT!

Water slide selfie! Terrible picture but it really shows how much fun I was having!
I love being and acting like a kid!

Love this picture of Chris! Priceless!

Each of us rode both of the water-slides about 4 times each and played in the splash pad for over an hour before retiring at the Serenity deck on a hammock! This was followed by our first venture at the hot-tubs offered on the Lanai Deck 5. There are 2 hot-tubs on each side and these are bigger and hotter than the others offered on the ship! However, do know that this is directly underneath the decks 6-9 guest balconies and that is kinda awkward. We had a good time nonetheless.

This was my view above from the Lanai hot-tub! All of those balconies look into these hot-tubs!
Interesting deck layout if you ask me!

Before dinner we went to Ocean Plaza to play 90s Trivia and Name that 90s song. Despite our 80s Song win on the Serenade, we have had a pretty bad record at playing trivia... That ended on this trip! Chris won the 1990s trivia with 19/25 score. He was very proud of himself and I was too! He even got a 24k piece of "ship" on a stick (Carnival Magic trophy) to prove it! That is a perfect 2/2 record on getting a "Ship" on a stick from each of the Carnival Ships we have sailed on!

So in other words he had no life in High School or College!
Either way, he won fair and square! Way to go Chris!

Evening
Before dinner we tried out the Taste Bar which was featuring Blue Iguana Cantina, a Mexican kitchen also offered on Funships 2.0. I LOVED Blue Iguana on the Conquest and cannot wait to have it again in November while on the Triumph. Dinner that night was enjoyable as we met a 10 year old version of Chris Davis who was "on the lower end of GOLD" on his loyalty program. We enjoyed talking to him and have laughed about him ever since. Dinner ended with the waitstaff dancing to Gangham style which was hilarious and very entertaining! Only Carnival does this but I LOVE it and they do it very well! Due to the change in itinerary formal night moved from night #6 to night #5 to accommodate a later departure from Cozumel. Be mindful of possible changes like this when you are making reservations or plans for a specialty restaurant on board. This goes for all cruise ships, not just Carnival.

A Traditional Formal Night picture from our balcony!

We joined the ranks of the rest of America and got us a Selfie Stick... This is a Selfie Stick failure!

Formal Night #2... Grand Cayman!

The evening concluded with comedy in the Comedy Club and while the "PG" shows were funny the adult shows were yet again too much for us. I also saw Mr. Copeland, a high school teacher of mine and good friend of my dad's (The Baptist Pastor mind you), in these shows and I was absolutely embarrassed and ran out of there before he could see me. Yeah... It was awkward.

Look... there we are! Making our way to Cozumel!

Night #5 Comedy Club!

The coolest towel animal of the trip and perhaps EVER! Loved this!

It was a great day in one of our favorite Western Caribbean ports and we were tired and ready for bed! Tomorrow was going to be Cozumel, a frequently visited port of ours, and we didn't have an excursion until 1:30 so we were looking to having a Sea Day like morning.

Next up... Cozumel and Sea Trek Helmet Dive

God is GOOD.. all the time!
