Let's Go... We're Ready!

The Backstory
Be sure to read about the morphing of this trip location and my Covid journey that led to this trip! Click here to read all about it-

Morning
We had dropped off Natalie and Luke with my parents for their own epic journey to Florida with my parents the night before so this was a very easy morning getting up and around. Chris took Oxford to Ms. Stephanie, our dog sitter, before 10AM and we were on the road to Houston Hobby Airport by 11AM, along with what seemed like the rest of the Houston metro! I had forgotten how terrible Friday traffic was in Houston!

We had planned to get lunch outside of the airport at Whataburger or something similar but the Houston traffic had other plans for us so we decided to just get to the airport and eat there. TIP- We parked at the Parking Spot (#1) off of Airport Blvd. This is a great location with covered parking, a good option during hurricane season in South Houston, as well as a FREE shuttle 24/7. Be sure to sign up for an account and get the app to save even more money on your parking at The Parking Spot!

The airport was VERY busy as we could tell just by the 20 minute wait to get a shuttle. Reminder- Texas is 100% open and at full capacity everywhere so the delay was not due to social distancing but rather just a very crowded and busy airport!
Travel is definitely back!

Afternoon
The lines to drop off bags at Southwest and the security line were very long but moved fast. In fact, we were through security in less than 30 minutes. By this time we were hungry so looked for a place to get a QUICK (and somewhat cheap) bite to eat. We looked at the main concourse of Hobby Airport but every restaurant was PACKED with a line out the door just to put your name in. We suddenly remembered that in April when we had a flight at gate 2, there were a few places to eat in this small section of the terminal. SECRET TIP (You know, one of those things you want to share but then again not share so it still is kept a secret)- Gates 1-5 is the place to go! EVERY OTHER PERSON who does not have gate 1-5 will go straight to the larger and more populated terminal area of gates 6-50. But gates 1-5 has a Pappasitos (with a bar), Chick-fil-A, as well as a Peet's Coffee. There was hardly anyone in this area and NO LINES! We got right in to Pappasitos and the service was incredible! If you can make the short walk to gates 1-5 at Hobby Airport, DO IT!

This was such a nice added touch to the chaos in the terminal!
LIVE MUSIC by local orchestral musicians!

I had to get my Tex-Mex fix before we headed west!

After lunch we made our way to our gate, which had changed since check in, and waited for our boarding time. TIP- Be sure to download the Southwest App to get up to the minute details of gate changes and other important travel info.

This flight was about 90% full but at least 70% of those were families traveling with small kids. There were also several medical needs on this flight and the boarding took over 45 minutes since there were so many with wheel chairs. We were in boarding group B but we found an empty row about 6 rows from the back of the plane. We sat down on the window and the aisle and hoped nobody would sit in that middle seat. Our hopes (and prayers) worked and as they were shutting the gate, the last passenger sat down and we had an empty seat between us! Thank you Jesus!

We are on our way... I cannot wait to touch down in CA!

Sometimes I still cannot believe I live here! I love H-Town!

Not bad snacks for a 4 hour flight... Not Keto but that is ok, right?
I'm on vacation!

The mountains as we approached the CA border!

Do you know the way to San Jose?

Our arrival into San Jose!
This was picture perfect!

The 4 hour flight was fairly boring and uneventful, just the way we like it! We arrived in San Jose on time despite the late departure but there was another plane at our designated gate so we sat on the tarmac for about 30 minutes before pulling up to our gate. That had never happened to me and it was a little nerve-wracking and claustrophobic! I am so glad we didn't have a connecting flight!

Evening
After we got off the plane and got our luggage, we made our way to the Rental Car Center just outside the airport terminal. There were 3 parties in front of us, one of which was a very older couple and both were in wheel chairs. You could tell there was an issue as both of the Budget Rental Car workers were helping this couple. We had been waiting about 20 minutes before we heard the workers tell the couple "You are at the wrong airport" and "We don't offer trucks at this location". Then we heard them say "You can have this SUV instead". I didn't think much of it as I was too irritated with the short staffed workers and just so exhausted. It was late and my body was just physically done! Finally after about 35 minutes, we got to the counter to get our car and get out of the airport!

As the worker looked up our reservation she called to the garage to locate which car would be ours. After about 12 minutes on the phone, she realized she gave our SUV to that older couple. We eventually were told we would have an SUV from Avis Rental Car, a sister company to Budget. Whatever... let's just GO!
We got our paperwork and went to get our car.

We waited... And waited... And Waited! This was a car that had just been returned same day so had to be cleaned out and washed. After another 30 minutes of waiting I was super irritated so went to the Avis counter in the garage and asked where our car, a small Mazda SUV, was. "It's on its way ma'am. Just wait here" Well, that waiting worked fine for about another half hour and then the "HUNGRY BEAR" came out in Chris. We saw several other groups who were behind us in the long line at the Budget counter come and GO with their car. But there were no workers pulling up the cars to guests and only one worker at the counter. This would be a preview of our entire experience in California! Chris went to the Avis counter and spoke to a manager and within minutes we were upgraded to a bigger SUV.

Well hello there Jeep Grand Cherokee.. We have patiently waited for you!

The whole ordeal took nearly 2 hours and the daylight had faded. It was after 7PM before we pulled away from the San Jose Airport. We had planned to go into San Francisco that evening to explore but this delay changed things as the San Jose airport was an hour and fifteen minutes from SFO.

Whoa... WHOA! The difference in gas prices in Houston vs San Jose!
We later learned the prices in San Francisco proper were over $5/ gallon!
It cost us $69 to fill the tank HALFWAY!

We were both disappointed and discouraged but as we drove on the CA 101, we saw a sign for Stanford University! We looked at each other and knew we should get off and explore. This was an unexpected blessing as we never dreamed we would have time to see this!

Stanford had these types of signs all over campus. This was really interesting!
We made sure to stay only in areas that were open!

The Hoover Tower in the quad at Stanford!

The "zones" throughout the campus!
This was set pre-Covid!

The Stanford stadium!

Stanford was a GORGEOUS campus and not at all like the old and worn down campus I imagined. We drove around and explored for over an hour before making our way to Brisbane, CA where our hotel was located.

The Double Tree San Francisco Airport NORTH was located in Brisbane, CA and about 10 miles from downtown San Francisco. TIP- This was an OUTSTANDING hotel with great amenities (hello warm chocolate chip cookies) but there were not restaurants, gas stations or anything really nearby. Just to get to a Walgreens and dinner options, we had to drive 5 miles south to San Bruno or into San Francisco. This was not a deal breaker but something to keep in mind as you book hotels. Usually an airport hotel is not only incredibly safe, but it is also centrally located to the airport and has lots of outside amenities like food and gas within blocks. This would be my only complaint from this particular hotel... in that it did not offer the outside amenities!

This was such a gorgeous view!

Hello Double Tree... Long time no see!

I really enjoyed this hotel and hotel room!

Our Queen Marina View room... So glad we went with 2 queens plus a view vs a King and roof view!

We got checked in and enjoyed our hot and fresh Double Tree cookies from our Marina View top floor room and then went to Walgreens to get bottled water and snacks for our long excursion day coming up the next day. We were both SO TIRED from the delay at the airport and the long drive into Brisbane and we could not find any food options near this Walgreen besides a McDonald's so we went back to hotel to order food for delivery.

We got back to the hotel after 9PM and ordered from a local Chinese restaurant that was suggested from the front desk worker. As 10PM rolled around and our food was still not here Chris was getting VERY frustrated. He called the restaurant several times and finally at 10:30PM (12:30PM central time as our bodies had not adjusted to the time change yet) our food arrived. I ordered the wrong thing and was not happy with mine at all so I ate a very little and then literally crashed. My poor body was just too tired and exhausted. I had a lot of shortness of breath this day and wanted as much rest as possible.

We were off to a TERRIBLE start to our foodie trip... Oh well!

Despite the frustration once arriving in California, it was a good day. The following day was going to be our absolute busiest day so we knew we needed as much rest as possible.

UP NEXT... DAY 2 with Muir Woods and WINE COUNTRY!

Last Minute to Las Vegas- December 2020

Last Minute to Las Vegas
December 27-30, 2020
Happy New Year to US

THIS TRIP WAS AMAZING... And so needed!
We will be back Las Vegas!

It's 2020 and this year has been such a "hot mess express". We have had many cruises cancelled and trips rerouted and overall, for traveling, it has been not fun at all. The year overall has not been that bad and we have been lucky enough to not have been diagnosed with COVID in our small family four. I pray we can continue to have a bubble of protection around us.

During Christmas Break I decided to randomly look at Orbitz and see what the prices were for travel. I looked at a few places but keep in mind California and New York are crazy shut down now... I then looked at Las Vegas. I was BLOWN AWAY at how cheap it was going to be the week between Christmas and New Years. We're talking LESS THAN $100 PER PERSON for a flight and 2-3 nights ON THE STRIP. I investigated more and on a whim, we booked a trip to Las Vegas staying at THE BELLAGIO. I never dreamed I would be able to stay at a place like this... perhaps EVER! We then used some loyalty points on our MyVegas app to get a FREE ROOM at The Mirage.

It turned out to be a different kind of trip due to COVID but we did not let the constant mask wearing or dinner reservations needed bother us. We had a BLAST and are already planning another trip!

Check out our trip info below:

We loved this LAST MINUTE trip to LAS VEGAS!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

This was an AMAZING trip and we are so grateful to have been able to go and celebrate the ending to this crazy year. Shout out to my parents and sister who kept the kids for a few days after Christmas so we could enjoy this trip!

Thanks for following along! It's not our typical cruise blog but we LOVED getting to actually "travel" somewhere!
Our Baltic Cruise is still planned for June 2021 (Although we are not holding our breath). In the meantime, we will dream of past cruises and look for the good in the world of travel!

Thanks again... STAY SAFE AND HEALTHY!

Last Minute Las Vegas- Day 3

A Quiet Ending  Las Vegas 2020 Day 3

December 29, 2020

I woke up early to try and catch the sunrise from our window but the clouds made that difficult.

Good morning... 6:12AM!

We ordered Mobile To-Go from SNACKS in The Bellagio and got the breakfast pizza again and were satisfied. We changed quickly and went to The Bellagio Pool which opened at 9am. It is a heated pool but at 45* outside, it was a cold experience. The pool itself was magnificent and I can only imagine how awesome it would be in the Summer (or even spring). It was an “You Only Live Once” type of experience and I am glad we did it!

It was so cold!

Within an hour of being in the pool, the Cosmo started to cast a shadow over the whole pool. That pretty much did us in!

YOLO... I am glad we did this!

The Bellagio Pool area... It is so gorgeous!

We then got ready for the day and checked out at The Bellagio. The check out in the “Express Check Out” area near the elevators was flawless and quick.

One final view from our window! WE LOVED THIS SO MUCH!

This one is postcard worthy!

Thank you Bellagio so much for this upgrade!
While we were leaving we noticed the Bellagio Poker room was COMPLETELY FULL with many waiting in line at the entrance. We never figured out what was going on but it was only 11AM.

A Deep Dish Afternoon

We went over to the Bally’s mall area to eat pizza at Giordano’s. We did not have a reservation but were able to get right in at the outside bar area, but they did put our name in the reservation que as a “contact tracing” thing I guess. The deep dish pizza was UNBELIEVABLE! It took right at an hour to make but it was well worth the wait! It was delicious.

Cheers to the last day! Once again, these drinks were fantastic!

The Classic Chicago Deep Dish... Worth every minute of wait and every penny!
This was a small (6 slices) and $29.95! My mouth is watering just thinking about it! SO GOOD!

Then we made our way to The Mirage, with luggage in tow, and were pleasantly surprised to get checked in right away before 1PM. This was a comped room from the MyVegas app and it did not disappoint. We were able to get a Strip view room facing south. We were able to see the strip and the mountains to the northwest of the strip, covered in snow. The room itself was nothing to write home about, especially having just come from The Bellagio but I would stay there again. Having stayed at a lower/ bargain hotel on the Strip, Excalibur in 2018, and then The Bellagio, the Mirage was perfectly in the middle.

There were not many checking in it seemed.

The comped room was on the 23rd floor and fairly spacious!

BUT... The view was incredible!

I loved being able to look out the window and see SNOW on the mountains!

My only complaint was that there were not plug ins (of any kind) at the nightstand. We had to charge our phones in the bathroom.

We dropped our bags and went downstairs to play on the table games. The Mirage only had 2 blackjack tables open (at any minimum) so we did not have a spot since that meant only 6 people could play at a time. We used another BOGO from MyVegas for drinks at the Center Bar in The Mirage. We met a bartender who just got back to work THAT day. The Mirage had been closed since November 4 and lots were out of work and just returning. Unfortunately, The Mirage will also be closing on January 4th Monday- Thursday. I get it, I really do... but after having been to The Mirage and seen it, I am praying it can survive. The Original “Mega Resort” and now is so quiet you hardly notice you are in Las Vegas. We tipped the bartender VERY well!

Our Treasure is still at TI

We then went to Treasure Island as it has been our lucky spot the past few trips. They offered the Stadium Blackjack and even had machines IN THE SPORTSBOOK which was nice as we were watching the bowl games. These tables/ machines of Stadium Blackjack have become my favorite and the incredibly fast drink service made it hard to leave.  We gambled there for 4 hours or so before leaving to go back to The Mirage. We will be back Treasure Island

I love this view from near Treasure Island!

The Stadium Blackjack/ Roulette area in Treasure Island This is at the far south area of TI and they even added Baccarat to these live dealer machines!

We went back to The Mirage for dinner and used another BOGO for sandwiches at the Snack Bar. These sandwiches were HUGE and we enjoyed them. By now it was 7-8PM and The Mirage was still dead with hardly anyone playing inside and only 1 bar and 2 restaurants open. We were so shocked as we expected it to be busier at night. It was very quiet and almost eerie.

The walk back at sunset was PICTURE PERFECT!

This has been a GREAT TRIP!

These sandwiches were $15 and $18 each but so good and filling! I highly recommend the Meatball sandwich!

We watched the Volcano Show outside the Mirage for the 1st time ever and it was incredible. I cannot believe we have never seen it! Then we spent the rest of the night inside the Mirage at the sportsbook bar, center bar and roulette table. The tables were still not open and not a lot of people playing anywhere. We tried to make one large last bet to win some money back and that did not work! Unfortunately we never got back up and lost most of the money we brought with us but we still had an amazing time. I mean it is Las Vegas! You are going to win some… and lose some! We did not lose it all and for that I am proud of us!

Check out the Volcano show... This was SO AWESOME! Be sure to check out this FREE show when you are in Vegas!

This show was so cool! We will watch it again someday!

I love you Chris Davis!

And hey look... Casino Royale is still there! I remember my first trip to Vegas in 2008... I pulled that MASSIVE slot machine and lost $20 just like that! Awww... memories!

The Siegfried and Roy at The Mirage Center Bar... YES PLEASE !

We ended the night in the hotel room around midnight and I wanted to do something crazy and take Sprite and cookies from the mini bar. Chris had planned to do the same but then I tasted the cookies and told him to not open his and just eat mine. WOW… I am so glad I did that. It turns out the 12oz can of Sprite was $10 and the bag of cookies was $18. Are you kidding me! I grew up being told “Never take anything from the mini bar. That is how they get you.” Well AIN'T THAT THE TRUTH! I could not believe how expensive they were and no menu or price sheet to tell you how much until it was too late! Oh well… Just another “YOLO” moment!

$28... Never again! HAHA!

Another view from our 23rd floor room.

I love Las Vega so much!
The views of the strip are just priceless at night!

Getting Home

Our flight home was 9AM so we had to get up and wait for our UBER at 6AM. We scheduled the UBER and while I was worried about how it would work out, the driver arrived on time and we made it to the airport in plenty of time. The Uber from The Mirage to the Airport was $17 and we tipped our driver very well! However the airport was CRAZY even at 7AM when we arrived. SO MANY PEOPLE coming to Las Vegas, I guess for NYE. The inbound shuttles/ trains at the airport for literally neck to neck people. I feel we left just at the right time.

It was a GREAT trip and I am so glad we booked it and “gambled” on the whole ordeal. If you are thinking about taking a trip to Las Vegas, DO IT. They could really use our support. Yes you have to wear a mask all the time AND yes you have to have reservations pretty much EVERYWHERE but don’t let that ruin your trip. It is what it is… And we LOVED every minute of it. Thanks LV for having us! We will be back!
