A Legendary Trip North to Alaska- Ketchikan, AK

10 Year Anniversary Cruise 2016- Carnival Legend

Slugs, Slugs and More Slugs
Ketchikan, AK
Sunday, June 26, 2016

We loved Ketchikan and the nature walk was OK. It was a walk in the park woods that was labeled as a hike but was hardly what I, and especially Chris, would call a hike. We enjoyed this old mining town in Alaska and enjoyed sampling the world's greatest salmon.

Morning
Despite being in Alaska and the "cold" temperatures we slept all night with our balcony door open letting in the cool air in our cabin. Since day 1 our cabin was unbelievably hot and near unbearable but unlike previous cruises with Carnival, our room steward did not bring us a fan for comfort. We had the AC repair come to our cabin 2 separate times and say it was working but it never got cold or even cool in our room so we decided to just sleep with the door open. (We learned our neighbors rooms, even the Captain's suite wrap-around, were overheated too) It was a wonderful night's sleep.

Our 1st view of Ketchikan... I swear EVERY cruise port in EVERY country has a Diamonds International!
Another view of Ketchikan.

I cannot wait to explore this city!

The Carnival Legend was in port in Ketchikan for a very short 6 hours from 7AM to 1PM so we wanted to get off as soon as we could to see the town before our "Nature Hike" excursion. We went back to the Pizza Pirate for the omelet station and once again ordered our customized omelets and were sitting down to eat within 7 minutes.

We got off the ship around 7:15AM and spent nearly an hour exploring this old mining town before meeting up with our tour at 8:15AM. Keep in mind lots of the stores in Ketchikan were not open this early since it was a Sunday. We met up with our tour but had to wait nearly 30 minutes for late arrivals before boarding our bus to the far side of Ketchikan for our hike. Ketchikan is officially the rainiest city in America, but we had no ran this day.

Alaskan's 1st City and the Salmon capital of the world!

The Tongass National Forest Welcome Center... It was closed!

The Liquid sunshine (rain) gauge... So far in 2016 they have received 140+.

The Salmon Market... This place is a MUST see! The owner is incredible and gave us FREE salmon just to come back after our tour, which we did!

Happy Sunday Y'all from Ketchikan!

Our actual 7349 balcony... (dead center) EASILY the best balcony and cabin we have EVER had!

We booked this tour through Viator based off a recommendation from a cruising friend who did this exact tour in 2015. She saw salmon and bears on her hike but I found out once we arrived on this tour that those types of sightings happen in JULY not June. This tour was over 3 miles through the wilderness and woods just north of Ketchikan. We spotted several types of Pacific Northwest tress and especially slugs. In fact, we spotted all five types of banana slugs. This tour was fun and we enjoyed it but I think it was VERY overpriced for what we actually did. This tour cost $89/per person and I feel it was worth about $39-49/ per person. Some of this frustration was brought on by the fact that we toured Capilano Bridge in Vancouver, BC just a week earlier where we learned much of the same information. "Next time" we will do something different in Ketchikan but with so few port hours it made it difficult no matter what you did.

Our 1st slug... the white banana slug!

Western Hemlock... well known on the west coast and the leaves have a citrus taste!

The famous salmon berry... Too bad on the others on our tour were hogs, we never got to taste one!

The Broad Maple Leaf- Not necessarily the maple leaf from the Canadian flag.
This was my favorite tree of the tour!

"Spaghetti Leave" tree- This was around even when the dinosaurs were there!

I loved the gorgeous flowers on this tour!

This is the creek where the bears and salmon are but again... IN JULY!

Afternoon
Our tour was over around 11:45PM and we then walked around town getting last minute Alaska souvenirs and went to the Salmon Capital of the world at the Salmon Market. We got several gifts of salmon for ourselves and family and then headed back to the ship. It was about 12:15PM and this was the longest line we had encountered yet with over 500 people trying to get back on board.

Once back on board we put away our souvenirs and then went to the only food option open on this day which was the Lido buffet. We never felt the "smallness" of this ship and we have never felt crowded on ANY Carnival ship... until now. I swear to you ALL 2,600 passengers were in line for the Lido lunch buffet. In fact, there are 4 buffet lines and the lines themselves were so long they were over-lapping each other. I would suggest ordering room service on this day!

After lunch we went back to our balcony to watch sail away from Ketchikan. It was beautiful and we stayed out on the balcony for nearly 2 hours. We knew when we booked this cabin that we wanted to spend LOTS of time on the balcony and that is pretty much all we did the whole cruise. I would highly recommend this balcony style when sailing in Alaska.

The picturesque mountains in Ketchikan from sail away!

We loved this little town... So simple and so cute!

The other ships in Ketchikan:
The Celebrity Millinium- After seeing the Aft Suites on this ship, ours is NOTHING!
I want to sail on this ship before I die. It is my new BUCKET-LIST cruise ship!

The Celebrity Solstice.
It had to tender into Ketchikan because 3 weeks prior a cruise ship came into the pier too fast and damaged Ketchikan's 4th terminal. So be advised there is a possibility your ship MAY tender in Ketchikan!

The Grand Princess (sailing from San Francisco)

Mid-afternoon we decided to get out and explore the ship more as we had not done that too much on this trip like usual. We hit up the Coffee bar and then went and played Harry Potter trivia. As expected, we did not win! No 24K piece of SHIP on a stick for us this time! We were sad and even tried to buy one but it is something that has to be earned! BUMMER!

We came back to the room and you guessed it... sat on the balcony until dinner time. By this time (5PM) we had sailed past the Alaska mainland and saw several small islands on the port side of the ship but on the starboard side was all ocean. We did not see any whales at this time but this was the area near Stephen's Passage where we spotted the previous whales.

Time for some pre-dinner selfies!

Evening
It was the 2nd formal night of the cruise and we wanted to get there early in hopes of a faster and smoother dinner experience. This was a great idea as the service was some of the best we had experienced... until the dancing. The waiters once again started singing and dancing and the service came to a halt. Once the dancing started it took 30 minutes just to place our dessert order and then the process of getting the dessert and finishing dinner made our final dinner time of 1 hour and 55 minutes which is just too long for two people, even for a formal night, in my opinion.

After dinner we went exploring ship. All week we had seen a veteran with his dog who was a service dog for PTSD. We had wondered all week where the dog "relieves himself" and then we found this!

Doggie Bathroom!
After dinner craziness!

This was the evening that the Playlist Productions performed the "Epic Rock" show in the Follies lounge. Chris and I both love Rock N Roll music and had not seen this Playlist show so we were very excited. We made a pit-stop at the Taste Bar and were not disappointed with the Blue Iguana samples. Once again, let me tell you how much better Carnival ships are with the 2.0 upgrades!

We saw Jen, the cruise director, on our way to the show and were able to get our traditional cruise director picture with her. Now I know that Chris and I had gained some weight from the Seattle trip and cruise in general but this picture just made us look like giants... That is because Jen is 4'2"... literally! But she was a GREAT cruise director and we enjoyed her a LOT! The "Epic Rock" show was AMAZING and one of our all time cruise ship favorites. If you like Rock N Roll you need to be sure to attend this show on the penultimate evening!

Our traditional Cruise Director picture!

We also saw our 1st comedy show of this cruise on this night. It was an adult only comedy show and it was not too bad at all. This comedian did not over use curse words or talk about lucrative subjects like sex or drugs. He was tasteful and I appreciated that. As we walked out of the lounge we saw the sun setting so we raced to the aft of the ship to our room to catch it and we barely did. We spent the following 3 hours on the balcony looking at the stars and just talking. We went to bed at 11:30PM but since we had to move our clocks forward back to Seattle time it was 12:30PM.

My favorite towel animal of the cruise!

Another GORGEOUS Alaskan sunset!

I love the colors!

This day was unique in the fact we were able to see an Alaska port and get half of a sea-day at the same time. We enjoyed Ketchikan and Alaska but unfortunately we will not be back for 6-7 years. Once again, God's creation was shockingly gorgeous and breathtaking.

Next up... Victoria, BC, Canada!
Eh!

God is good... ALL the time!

North by Northwest- 6 Magnificent Days

Alaskan Pre-Cruise Land Vacation to the Pacific Northwest

June 2016

We fell in LOVE with Vancouver... We WILL be going back!

Seattle... A west coast jewel and a great city to visit!

Chris and I have been planning a cruise to Alaska for over 3 years and we knew since we were sailing out of Seattle. WA and neither of us had been before that we would be planning a trip to Seattle. Little did we know this "short" pre-cruise trip would turn into a full vacation before it was all said and done. We flew into Seattle and then immediately drove 180 miles to Vancouver, BC, Canada and stayed there for a few days before returning to Seattle for 3 days. This turned out to be an incredible trip and even more than what we had hoped for.

I have created 5 separate entries for our daily activities and attractions. Each day has tips, tricks and most importantly pictures. I've even highlighted tips in red. I hope this helps you plan a trip to the Pacific Northwest.

Thank you Lord for this opportunity to see Your handiwork and experience 2 great cities. This trip was such a blessing but the true reason we came to the Pacific Northwest was to board a cruise ship to Alaska... Stay tuned for that blog!

God is good... ALL the time!

North by Northwest- I Hate Flying

* Disclaimer- Chris and I traveled to the Pacific Northwest and a cruise to Alaska in June 2016 as a 10 year anniversary trip. This will be a multiple entry blog that will highlight our activities, our reflections and of course pictures of these gorgeous locations! I have highlighted the tips and tricks of each post in red. I hope this helps in planning trips to Vancouver, Seattle or Alaska! Thanks again for following along!

June 29, 2016
Seattle, WA  to Houston, TX

It has been 14 days of pure bliss but now we are ready to be home. After a glorious day of baseball and a wonderful trip and cruise, all we want is to get home as soon as we can. Our flight was at 10:35AM and we left the hotel before 7:30AM which gave us plenty of time.

Once we arrived at the airport we had to wait in an old style check-in line for the airline, Southwest. This turned out to be a 30 minute wait just to turn in luggage and bags. Then we rounded the corner to see one of the longest security lines we have ever seen and we have flown out of Atlanta and even Heathrow Airport in London. This was crazy. We ended up using an additional line down the airport but this too was crazy long. It wrapped around 3 separate zig-zag lines and we were in this for nearly 1 hour. Once we finally got through that line it was already 9:30AM. That whole process took nearly 2 hours. It was easily the worst US airport we have ever experienced and put somewhat of a damper on our "Let's go back to Alaska" feelings.

I grabbed my official last Seattle Starbucks and sat in the waiting area. There were already a lot of passengers including countless older passengers with wheelchairs and walkers and a very large family bring large carry-ons and extra baggage. Not to mention the terrible smelling passenger sitting near us. I was already fighting some stomach issues all trip and was anxious about the flight but this smell was just too much. Between that and the massive amount of sneezing and coughing, I was just ready to WALK home. I am a HUGE germ-a-phobe and this was killing me.

Our plane was late arriving which in turn made our departure late as well. On Southwest you get a boarding "group" and it is open seating. On the 1st flight we lucked out, by the grace of God, and got the very 1st row with 2 seats and ample leg room but this flight was proving to be not as good. We ended up 5 rows from the back near a family of 8 kids, some college girls and a crying baby! When I first sat down I noticed Chris's tray table covered in a nasty flem I can only assume was snot. I just sat down and said a prayer!

Our 737 plane finally arrived... JUST GET ME HOME!

We ended up taxi on the runway for nearly 30 minutes before finally leaving the ground. The flight was fine and we were able to see lots of the beautiful areas heading back to Houston but between being grossed out and my claustrophobia kicked into high gear I decided it would be OK if we didn't fly for a while.

Now this is something I already miss... I have never seen such a gorgeous mountain!
Mt. Rainer will now always have a special place in my heart!

A gorgeous lake near a mountain close to Mt. Rainer!

A Houston suburb... Not sure which but I am guessing Cypress area!

Ahhh... Houston traffic! Even from the air it looks TERRIBLE!

Downtown Houston... It feels good to be home!

We landed around 5:30PM, about 30 minutes late, and got our bags and were headed home by 6PM. We chose the only non-stop flight offered that day but unfortunately that meant getting home during Houston rush hour. It turned out to be not as bad as usual and we were home in The Woodlands before 7PM.

4 hours and nearly 40* difference... Let me tell you, we were in SHOCK!

We got home and went and picked up our dogs from our dog sitter but unfortunately we were not picking up our kids until the next day from my parents in Tyler, TX. For the first time in a LONG time I did not unpack or do just about anything. I crashed on the couch as we watched some shows on the DVR. We were exhausted!

It was literally the trip of a lifetime and we are so grateful we got to experience it together. We are so lucky to have wonderful parents who helped take care of our kids in our absence and supported us along the way. We do plan on going back to Alaska for another anniversary trip but it will be a few years!
Thank you Jesus for this and the many other blessings you have given us. We are so undeserving!

Once again, I am speechless! All I can say is...

God is good! ALL the time!

A Legendary Trip North to Alaska- Juneau, AK

10 Year Anniversary Cruise 2016- Carnival Legend

The Last Great Race
Juneau, AK
Saturday, June 25, 2016

Despite the typical all-day, constant rain Juneau did not disappoint. This quaint little town was beautiful and mysterious. The spirited huskies whisked us through the forest as we took in the breathtaking scenery.

Morning
Once again the Alaskan daylight came shining through around 3:30AM but luckily we did not get up until nearly 6:30AM. (Once again, keep this in mind when staying in a balcony cabin) After a good night's sleep we woke up to dreary and rainy weather. It was raining consistently the entire time we were getting ready yet it was so beautiful that I didn't even care that I was getting wet... Can you say "BAD HAIR DAY"?
We could already tell Juneau was a gorgeous city!

The rain and the mist made for a true Alaskan day!

Getting ready... There is NEVER a dull moment with Chris!

The Carnival Legend was in port at Juneau from 7AM to 3PM so once again, we arrived to the Lido buffet omelet station in plenty of time anticipating crowds. Toward the back of the Lido area is PIRATE PIZZA and during the breakfast hours they prepare customized omelets and special breakfast pizzas. We learned about this on this day and it was a real hidden gem. We hardly ever had to wait in line.

We had cancelled our whale-watching tour through a private company the day before in Skagway and rescheduled to do a tour through Carnival called "Sled Dog and Musher Camp Discovery". We cancelled because we had already seen 34 humpback whales from our balcony so we thought the $135/ per person price tag was a little high (since we saw them for free) and saved that money and put it towards the new Carnival excursion. We went through Viator and let me just say they were very kind and understanding and we got that money back within 8 hours. The Sled Dog excursion was $139/ per person and lasted 3 hours.

We got off the ship at 7:40AM after we received clearance from customs. There was a line of about 80-100 people at that time. We made our way down the pier to the covered waiting area as the rain had started to pick up. Our excursion was supposed to begin at 8AM and around 7:55AM we saw a gorgeous Alaskan husky walk up to the pavilion. We followed him to our tour bus.
Alaska's Capital City!

Our chauffeur for the tour!

We're READY for another AWESOME Alaskan day!

We boarded the bus and spoke to an awesome bus driver who hailed form Idaho who was working with Holland American Cruise Line as a hired bus driver for the summer cruise season. Her and her husband get paid for that work and then after 400 hours (10 weeks) they each received a FREE cruise anywhere in the world. Boy, let me tell you... Chris and my ears really perked up! We are going to look into this as our kids leave the house!

Juneau, Alaska is one of 33 towns in Southeast Alaska and only 3 of those have roads in and out. Juneau was not one of these 3 and is only accessible by air or boat. There is an interesting story about how Juneau got it's name. It is too long to explain on this thread but it is worth reading up on if you are into that type of thing. We traveled through the town of Juneau, past the state capital building and the governors mansion to the only bridge in Juneau across to Douglas island.

The Governor's mansion where Sarah Palin used to live.

The Capital building which is being completely overhauled and renovated currently.

We traveled about 10 minutes to our musher camp where we got out of the bus and immediately got into our "sled" (golf cart) to go for a ride with the sled dogs.

The Musher Camp area.

When we first pulled up and they were acting like this I was a little skeptic!

Our 1st sites of the sled dogs.

We're in the "Sled" and ready to go!

These dogs can really run! We were going 17+ miles per hour!

This was "Queen" the lead dog!

This was towards the end... They were TIRED!

This was AWESOME as there were only 16 70-80 pound dogs pulling 4 adults (who've been on a cruise mind you), 2 kids a large golf cart and their musher through the rough and muddy wilderness for nearly a mile. This was an awesome ride and we enjoyed it very much. These dogs pulled us for about 3/4 mile before stopping to let them rest and get pictures then they finished the 1 mile journey back to camp.

Going for a sled ride!

Hello!

These poor dogs... The were muddy and dirty but LOVED pulling us around!

I would be tired too!

After the ride we went to a covered area to learn about the dogs and their races. It was here that we learned that "Alaskan husky" is just a breed of mut basically and not a full bred dog. We met Lira, a special sled dog, and her musher who told us all about the Iditarod and several other races in Alaska.
The Iditarod and Yukon Quest race maps!

I am ready to win the race... Yeah, right! I wouldn't last a minute!

Finally we went over to the puppy area and got to see 3 different liters of puppies. The 1st liter was about 2 months old and they were HYPER! They even had a giant hamster wheel for them to play on!

We need one of these for Abbey and Oxford!

This was a very unique piece of equipment for these dogs!

The 2nd liter was just 2 weeks old and they were absolutely gorgeous. This liter had 9 puppies so we each got to hold one for several minutes. They were just adorable.

This was just priceless!

I wanted to take him home!

We just loved them all so much... so tiny!

Then we finished the puppy tour with a liter that was nearly 1 month old. This liter only had 4 puppies so we had to share but they were still adorable and so playful. In fact, one even bit Chris on the face!

This mama was not excited about giving up her pups!

It's crazy to think that this liter is only 14 days older but 2x in size and so much more playful! I loved these!

This was my favorite... This puppy just wanted to lick and lick and lick!

This was a great excursion and Chris and I loved it. I know this would especially be a hit with kids. I do think it was a little overpriced at $139/ adult and $89/ child but I am glad we chose to cancel and do this excursion as I feel we were able to get yet another "gem" of Alaska.

Afternoon
Once we got back to town we explored a little and then found some Alaskan Fudge. This was so good and really made us hungry. We wandered aimlessly for a little while before landing at Tracy's King Crab Shack in downtown Juneau. I had read about this place so I was excited to try their "KING" crab legs. We each ordered a "special" which included crab bisque, 4 mini crab cakes, rolls and an 18"+ king crab leg priced at $34.99/ each. This was the best crab legs I have ever had and you could tell it was caught that day (which it was). This was local seafood at its best. If you are going to Juneau and have time, be sure to stop at Tracy's but be warned they sell out fast! We got there at 11:30AM and while we were eating they sold out of King Crab legs

The city and streets of Juneau.

2474 miles to TEXAS... wow that is FAR!

Tracy's King Crab Shack looks like another souvenir shop but in the back in the crabby goodness!

This was the "Special" and it was AMAZING!

Look at the MEAT inside this crab leg... My mouth is watering!

Tracy's Crab Shack taken from our balcony!

We then continued to wander around town looking for more souvenirs before stopping at the visitors center to ask about the Mendenhall Glacier but unfortunately, we were too late to get on the shuttle to the glacier and then make it back to our ship on time. Since we were able to see the Dawes glacier a few days prior we felt like we had already seen that aspect of Alaska but this glacier will be on our list for "next time" for sure!

These cruise ships were also in port in Juneau... I LOVE seeing other cruise ships!
Le Soleal Cruise Ship

Regent Seven Seas (voted best small cruise ship line... and $$$) Cruise Ship

The Island Princess

We got back on the ship around 12:45PM (there was a small line... maybe 50 people/10 minutes deep) and decided to go to the hot tub. We went to the hot tub in the mid-ship whirlpool that was covered since it was still raining and less than 55*. This hot tub was not very hot but more Luke-warm. We stayed there for over an hour before rowdy and unsupervised kids started splashing and being loud. We had to pull out our "teacher voices" but at that point we were done.

We went back to the room and showered up and then went to the balcony to watch sail away but it was still raining pretty steadily and it was windy so we stayed in our cabin. This was the only day it rained on our entire cruise but it was consistent with Alaskan theories of a "steady stream of rain".

We wandered around the ship for a while before coming back to our room as the rain had let up. We dried off our chairs and sat down for some relaxation. Within minutes we saw a few more whales and several seals and otters. That brought our total whale sightings to 37!

No tail this time!

See the whale at the VERY beginning and then later in the video! We finally got one on video... Usually I was taking pictures and Chris was using the binoculars!

One of the 1st thing people have asked since we have been home is "How was the swaying and the waters?" This was easily the SMOOTHEST seas we have ever sailed! We were cruising at 22 knots and you could not even tell we were moving!

Evening
We left our wildlife spotting hot-spot of our aft balcony and went to the MDR for dinner. We planned on arriving at the odd-ball time of 6:30-6:45PM but several other couples had the same theory so we were back to square one. The waiters waited still 4-6 tables were full then took orders, then placed orders, and etc. This meal was not bad at 1 hour 40 minutes but we feel it should have been faster and once again the waiter's dancing slowed down the whole process.

After dinner we returned to the room to look through the FunTimes for evening activities but both of us fell asleep and didn't wake up until nearly 11PM. Chris considered it a nap and went to the late night buffet (he says the brownies were the best he has had on a cruise... who knew) as I just went back to sleep.

It was an AMAZING day of exploring yet another state capital and snuggling beautiful  Alaskan husky sled dogs and puppies. We both thoroughly enjoyed Juneau and like the idea of working summers there in the distant future. It is a beautiful town and we loved the locals. Thank you Lord for yet another opportunity to see your handiwork, from the mountains/ scenery to the sled dogs!

Stay tuned for our last Alaskan stop... Ketchikan!

God is good... All the time!
